My Life as an Emoji

My Life as an Emoji

What’s in an emoji?

My life as an emoji - πŸ“šβ˜•οΈπŸ±

I think that covers it.

What’s in an emoji? That which we call a 🌹 by any other name would smell as sweet. That’s the saying, right? Ok maybe not quite, but you get the gist.

But back to emojis. They really are pretty amazing if you think about it. The ability to communicate (and truly understand) across cultural barriers, the ability to share nuance or a reaction without photo or video, or having to type “I ugly laughed at this,” is truly incredible.

At :speak:, we’re a fan of emojis. On :slack:, they help us communicate better in the age of COVID to help bridge the gap between in-person communication with body language and verbal cues and text communication that can sound a lot less conversational and collaborative.

You might even see one or two or 15 of us sporting a custom emoji of our favorite team for the MLB playoffs, the Stanley Cup Finals :preds:, or March Madness. :zags: Still can’t believe Zags didn’t get the W, amirite? Our Director of Marketing is a Baylor fan who will delete this sentence as soon as she finds it so just move along quietly and pretend you saw nothing. 🀫

What does this emoji even mean?

ANYHOO, emojis. They’re great. They’re awesome. They’re cool. Except when you have no idea what they mean. We’ve put together a guide of the most obscure emojis to help you navigate the WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN emoji anxiety moments.

If, like us, you sometimes find the endless multiverse of emojis confusing and terrifying and always feel like you’re using the wrong one and are then filled with self-loathing and want to go into a dark room and 😭, this blog is for you.

πŸ’€ - I am deceased. I find this thing so funny that I am dying of laughter. Gen Z is attempting to do away with everything that is good in life, and like skinny jeans and side parts, they’ve campaigned against the use of the πŸ˜‚ in favor of the πŸ’€. We have yet to see a petition. Just sayin'.

🚨 - Someone just got roasted. Applicable in instances where someone may roast a coworker for enjoying being a fan of the Kardashians, or even say, the St. Louis Cardinals. 🚨

☝️ - I agree with this. Not to be confused withπŸ–•which I definitely did not do in my first week. πŸ˜…

πŸ˜… - Speaking of which...the nervous laugh.

πŸ™ƒ - That’s ironic/goofy/silly. Also “whoops.”

🀯 - Mind = blown

😍 - That is one cute baby/dog/cat.

πŸ₯Ί - That is one extra cute baby/dog/cat.

πŸ₯΄ - Yikes.

πŸ‘€ - Depends on where you work. Some use this emoji as a side eye. At :speak:, it literally means I am looking.

πŸ‘» - I got the joke.

πŸ‘ - The clap, or the clap back, depending on the context.

🀌 - The closest thing we have to the chef’s kiss emoji which should definitely always be used when talking about delicious foods and great ideas.

🀰 - The I just finished eating tacos emoji - my favorite.

πŸ™ŽπŸ» - The can I speak to a manager emoji. Just kidding, but that should be a thing.

🧘‍♀️ - Namaste

πŸ† - You win - best comment, best gif, etc, etc.

πŸ’‘ - That’s a great idea.

🍡 - That’s some tea. Alternatively, what’s the tea? Not to be confused with actual tea.

πŸ”« - Pew pew. I use this a lot when people attack my love of Nickelback. THEY HAVE SOME GOOD SONGS OK.

πŸŽ‰ - Applicable for birthdays, celebrations, big wins, and when congrats are in order.

πŸ’š - Reserved for fans of Baby Yoda. That’s a thing. I just declared it.

πŸ’― - Spot on. I agree with this 100 percent.

πŸ”₯ - That is one excellent comeback.

‼️ - What the what what

™οΈ - Trademark it

"I mean, what in the world am I supposed to use this  for? Surely there’s a good use. That’s a fantastic emoji, but I can’t construct a social situation where it’s useful. All this is a long way of saying that emojis are responsible for everything that’s wrong with me."

- Matt Roberts, VP of Marketing and Sales

What’s your favorite emoji?

Speaksters weigh in. What’s your favorite emoji?

🍝  Both the word spaghetti and the concept of spaghetti is funny to me. I like that the fork is in the emoji. I feel like it’s well-executed from an artistic standpoint.

- David Caffey, Digital Marketing Manager + Senior SEO Specialist

Well we can’t use :middle_finger:so I’ll go with :smiling_face_with_tear: The smiling tear emoji can be used in almost any situation and make it lighthearted.

-Jordan Finney, Cinematographer

:chart_with_upwards_trend: Here on this team, we celebrate wins all the time. Is there a better emoji than the moving-on-up graph for the DM nerds like us?

-Cody Gross, Brand Strategist

πŸ₯³ because it means there's a reason to celebrate.

-nina kalpakis, developer

And that’s a wrap. 🎬
